Cometic uses stainless steel for increased strength, its ability to rebound and resist corrosion. The outer layers of the gasket are embossed and coated on both sides with a Viton rubber material designed to meet the demands of a variety of harsh sealing environments, load conditions and surface finishes. Arrow is AIRFLOW direction, not UP direction. So installation direction might mean arrow of your Purolator filter should be down (true for glove box installs) even if arrow on old filter is up (if it was an UP indication). I wish they mentioned this in product listing, on box, or on side of filter like most brands. Luckily, telephone customer service was super responsive. Otherwise, product is correct size, appears sturdily made.
